Surf Skate Science: Inspiring a New Path for Education

Surf Skate Science is a STEAM education program that rose out of the ashes of a tragic event: a school shooting in 2018 that deeply impacted our community. This tragedy highlighted for our family the need for a different path in education, one that could be a source of healing and a safe place for our community. We knew that education could be so much more than what we were used to—it could be a space where kids feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow in unique ways.


In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought yet another major shift, pushing many families to look beyond traditional schooling. With schools closed and online learning as the default, parents experienced an up-close view of what their kids were learning (and often what they weren’t learning). Many began to explore other options for education, looking for programs that allowed their children to thrive outside the traditional classroom. What used to be considered “alternative”—like homeschooling or microschooling—became a much more accepted path. Some families struggled with online models, while others embraced the freedom to explore more hands-on, project-based learning. This shift paved the way for programs like Surf Skate Science, which emphasizes real-world, active learning that fosters curiosity and creativity.



It’s Not Just About New Programs—It’s About the Freedom to Create Them


The key to innovation in education isn’t just about adding new programs. It’s about giving educators and community leaders the freedom to create learning experiences that meet students’ needs in fresh ways. Traditional public schools are often limited by strict rules, fixed curricula, and standardized practices that can stifle creativity. These constraints can make it hard for teachers who want to try new methods or adapt to individual student needs.


In contrast, programs outside the traditional system, like Surf Skate Science, can adapt quickly. We get direct feedback from families and students, assess what’s working (or not), and make adjustments right away. This flexibility allows us to shape the learning experience in real-time, responding to the needs of our students and ensuring that learning is relevant and engaging. Here, we’re not bound by the “one-size-fits-all” approach. Instead, we focus on creating a setting that empowers kids to explore their interests, take risks, and develop skills they’ll carry for life.

Just as freedom and flexibility drive innovation in business, education needs similar conditions to thrive.
