Surf Skate Science is a STEAM education program that rose out of the ashes of a tragic event: a school shooting in 2018 that deeply impacted our community. This tragedy highlighted for our family the need for a different path in education, one that could be a source of healing and a safe place for our community. We knew that education could be so much more than what we were used to—it could be a space where kids feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow in unique ways.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought yet another major shift, pushing many families to look beyond traditional schooling. With schools closed and online learning as the default, parents experienced an up-close view of what their kids were learning (and often what they weren’t learning).
