Engineering the Future at Hollywood’s Annual Cardboard Boat Race with Surf Skate Science
Get ready to engineer, design, and paddle your way to victory at the Annual Hollywood Cardboard Boat Race on Saturday, October 5th! Hosted at the City of Hollywood Marina, this highly anticipated event is more than just a race—it’s a dynamic, hands-on engineering challenge that brings creativity and teamwork to the forefront. Surf Skate Science is proud to be at the heart of this event, where students put their design skills to the test and experience the thrill of building and racing their own cardboard boats.
The Cardboard Boat Race: Engineering, Creativity, and Fun!
Hollywood's annual cardboard boat challenge is all about turning imagination into reality. Teams are tasked with designing and building a seaworthy vessel using only cardboard and a few simple materials. It’s a unique opportunity for participants to apply engineering principles in a fun, competitive setting, all while working together to solve real-world challenges. From sketching designs to paddling across the water, this project puts creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving into action.

Choose Your Theme: Cool Our Seas or Choose Your Own Theme
This year, Surf Skate Science invites participants to embrace the theme of eco-activism. Teams can choose to align their boat designs with our Cool Our Seas theme, highlighting the urgent need to protect our oceans from rising temperatures, or bring their own idea to life. Whether you choose to represent ocean conservation, sustainability, or another cause or theme close to your heart, this race is an opportunity to make a statement through design.
Stop by the Surf Skate Science tent for inspiration, hands-on learning, and a closer look at how rising ocean temperatures are impacting our coral reefs. Through engaging activities, students and visitors can explore the real-world effects of climate change on our marine ecosystems and discover how they can become advocates for the future of our oceans.
Beyond the Race: Cool Our Seas with VOLO Climate Week
Surf Skate Science is excited to partner with VOLO Climate Week™ to bring critical climate themes to the forefront of this year’s race. Our students will showcase how increasing ocean temperatures affect coral reefs and explore innovative solutions to combat these changes. Through interactive displays and hands-on activities, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the climate challenges facing our coastal environments and learn practical steps they can take to make a difference.
Bringing Engineering and Climate Awareness Together
At Surf Skate Science, we believe in making learning meaningful, engaging, and directly connected to the world around us. The Hollywood Cardboard Boat Race is the perfect platform for our students to showcase their engineering skills while also advocating for environmental stewardship. By integrating themes from VOLO Climate Week™, we’re helping students understand the connection between their projects and the broader climate challenges we face.
